Metro Rail Feasibility Study for Vijayawada–Amaravati Corridor

The 38-km corridor would link Vijayawada railway station to the Central Vista in 41 minutes, with a projected daily ridership of 3.2 lakh by 2035.

The Amaravati Metro Rail Corporation has submitted the detailed feasibility report for the Vijayawada–Amaravati metro corridor to the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, moving the long-discussed project into the formal appraisal pipeline. The 38-kilometre line would run from Vijayawada railway station through Mangalagiri to a terminal beneath the Central Vista plaza.

The report proposes 27 stations — 21 elevated and 6 underground in the capital core — with an end-to-end journey time of 41 minutes. Ridership modelling projects 1.9 lakh daily passengers at opening, rising to 3.2 lakh by 2035 as the capital's employment base matures.

Officials expect the Centre's appraisal to take six to nine months. If sanctioned on that timeline, tunnelling in the capital core would begin in late 2026 — synchronised, planners say, with the completion of the government complex it is designed to serve.
